• Distance measurement with the total station
The electronic distance measuring device (EDM) is an important part of the total station. The measurement range varies between 2.8 km and 4.2 km. The measurement accuracy ranges between 5 mm and 10 mm per kilometer measured. It is used together with an automatic target receiver. The measured distance is always the distance from the device to the object.
• Angle measurement
The electronic theodolite part of the total station is used for measuring vertical and horizontal angles. For measuring horizontal angles, any direction can be taken as a reference. For measuring the vertical angle, the vertical upward direction (zenith) is taken as a reference. The accuracy of angle measurement ranges between 2 and 6 seconds.
• Data processing
This device is equipped with an internal microprocessor. The microprocessor averages multiple observations. With the help of the slope distance and the measured vertical and horizontal angles, when the device axis and targets are provided, the microprocessor calculates the horizontal distance and the X, Y, Z coordinates.
When atmospheric temperature and pressure are provided, the processor can apply temperature and pressure corrections to the measurements.
• Display
The electronic display unit can show different values when the corresponding keys are pressed. The system can display horizontal distance, vertical distance, horizontal and vertical angles, the height difference between two observed points, and the three coordinates of the observed points.
• Electronic field book
The data of each point can be stored in an electronic field book (similar to a compact disc). The capacity of the electronic field book varies between 2000 and 4000 points. The surveyor (operator) can upload the data stored in the book to a computer and reuse the book.
How to use the total station
The total station device is mounted on a tripod and leveled using leveling screws. Within a small range, the device can self-adjust to the leveling position.
