Wood, being easy to absorb moisture, can crack when shaped while still wet. Therefore, the moisture content of wood used especially for furniture manufacturing must be within appropriate values. Moisture measuring devices provide very good results to obtain this value.
OVEN METHOD
One of the methods applied in measuring moisture is the OVEN METHOD, where samples are taken from the wood, weighed, and after drying at a temperature of 101–105 degrees, weighed again, thus determining the moisture content of the wood.
Moisture Meters
There are moisture meters that allow measurement of various parameters. However, the most preferred among these moisture meters are devices that measure differences in electrical resistance caused by moisture content. The most important advantage of these types of moisture meters is their portability. For this reason, the moisture amount in wood production and storage areas can be detected more easily. Moisture measuring devices used for wood can also be used to measure moisture in concrete, brick, and plaster.
Portable measuring devices have needle-shaped electrodes that are inserted into the wood. These needles penetrate the wood to a depth of 6-8 mm and measure the moisture value of the area they pass through.
Resistance-type Moisture Measuring Devices
The electrical resistance of wood begins to change at a moisture content below the fiber saturation point, which is between 25% and 30%. Therefore, resistance-type moisture measuring devices will start to give erroneous results at a moisture content above 25%. At a value below 7%, the conductivity of wood decreases. A measuring device chosen of this type will not perform a healthy measurement below this value. Therefore, a working range between 7% and 25% is very suitable for many wood usage conditions.
Electrode Arrangement
The way electrodes are placed on the product is clearly specified in the manual. For this, the manual is consulted and the necessary arrangement is made, thus obtaining an accurate result.
Temperature Value
During the measurement of wood, heat will occur and the temperature value of the wood will change. However, moisture meters can make adjustments according to the temperature.
