What is a motherboard? How does a motherboard work?

The motherboard is one of the most important components of a computer. It has essential functions, such as ensuring communication between the other components of the computer.

The motherboard is a hardware skeleton made up of an assembly of electronic circuits that connect all parts and equipment inside or outside the computer and ensure their coordination and communication. On the motherboard are processors, also known as chipsets, which have a significant impact on the computer’s performance.

The motherboard is the first and most important printed circuit board in a computer. It is an electronic circuit that hosts all the computer’s components and enables their communication. It is made of a hard plastic called fiberglass, usually with a dark green color.

With the development of technology, the structure and functions of motherboards have changed. Various types of motherboards have also been developed. The minimum components and hardware found on a standard motherboard include: processor, chipset, RAM, sound card, video card, Ethernet network card, BIOS, and card slots. Additionally, PS/2 connections for the keyboard and mouse are integrated into the motherboard.

      How does the motherboard work?

The main function of the motherboard is to ensure the flow of data between the units present on it and those that will be connected through the expansion slots. Motherboards have undergone significant changes, especially with the emergence of Pentium processors in the market. It is observed that all units on the motherboard are connected to integrated circuits called chipsets. The chipset is considered the brain of the motherboard. These integrated circuits ensure the compatible functioning of the entire system. The components of the motherboard are connected either through conductive paths called buses (BUS) or directly to the chipset. For data transfer to the chipset, if data processing is required or if the data must be received in a specific order, interface control units are used.

For example, data processed on a hard disk is transferred through the processor, and data processed by the processor to a screen or sound card is transferred thanks to these integrated circuits on the motherboard.
