The processor, also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU), is a system that can be considered the brain of the computer. All actions performed on the computer must necessarily pass through the processor.
Pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse are operations that take place directly in the processor. Processors perform the role of processing data and executing software commands, together with the main memory and input-output operations. The central processing unit has the ability to perform arithmetic and logical operations. The first processors were systems produced to carry out certain operations, most often only a single operation.
With the emergence of microprocessors in the 1970s, the areas of use of the processor began to expand. Thus, processors are used today in automobiles, mobile phones, computers, and many other products.
If we talk a little about microprocessors; these are processors that contain millions of transistors, semiconductor materials. Electrical signals pass through these transistors and are transformed into basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The part that performs these operations is called the ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit).
What is the processor used for?
The central processing unit, that is the processor, is the most important component, considered the brain of the computer. All movements and functions that are intended to be performed on the computer are carried out by the processor.
The data received from other devices is processed through mathematical operations, a result is obtained, and this is sent to the necessary places. All these operations take place in less than a second.
For a better understanding, let’s take an example; when the command to add the numbers 3 and 5 is given, the processor activates the arithmetic center, performs this operation, and transmits the result.
MP3 files are files encoded by a special method. The processor opens them, processes them, and sends the necessary data to the sound card. Thus, we can hear the music.
In short, the processor intervenes in any command that requires calculation or decision-making; in calculation operations, the “arithmetic” unit intervenes, and in those requiring decision-making, the “logic” unit. That is, it acts according to the given command to obtain the desired result.
Microprocessors are made up of millions of transistors that function as switches. Electrical signals flow through this system depending on the programming of these switches. These signals allow the computer to perform all mathematical operations. Also, the processor uses the simple binary system, that is, the digits 0 and 1.
